West leads women's alpine to sixth place in GS at St. Michael's Carnival

CAMBRIDGE, Vt. -- First-year student-athlete Hannah West led the Bates women's alpine ski team to sixth place out of 13 teams in the giant slalom Friday at the Saint Michael's Carnival, placing 16th out of 75 collegiate skiers.

West (Bend, Ore.) recorded first and second runs of 55.86 and 58.55 seconds at Smugglers Notch. was the third fastest by an athlete from a Division III school. Senior captains Hannah Johnson (Incline Village, Nev.) and Sierra Ryder (Orinda, Calif.) took 32nd and 33rd places, respectively, in combined times of 1:56.44 and 1:56.57. The Bates trio combined for 67 team points, edging Colby (62) for sixth place.

The Bates men's team had three scorers in the men's GS, led by first-year Calvin Wilson (Canyon Dam, Calif.) taking 34th place out of 76 competitors with a two-run combined time of 1:51.51. Sophomore Tagert Mueller (West Vail, Colo.) was 35th (1:51.85) and sophomore Ryan Clermont (Lincoln, N.H.) took 39th place in 1:52.70.
