Mueller twins lead alpine with top-20 finishes in Dartmouth Carnival slaloms

LYME, N.H. -- Bates sophomore twins Griffin and Tagert Mueller led the Bobcat men's and women's alpine ski teams to an impressive day in the slalom Saturday at the Dartmouth Carnival.

Griffin Mueller (West Vail, Colo.) placed 12th and first-year Hannah West (Bend, Ore.) placed 15th out of 59 competitors in the women's slalom, while Tagert Mueller (West Vail, Colo.) notched a career-best 20th-place finish in the men's slalom at Dartmouth Skiway.

Griffin Mueller recorded her third top-15 finish in the slalom this season with her second-highest career carnival finish, with the 12th-best first run in the field (55.24 seconds) and the 11th-fastest second run (55.42), for a combined time of 1:50.66.

West registered a combined time of 1:52.19 to take 15th place, 0.04 in front of both Middlebury's Kathleen Utter and Williams' Madeleine Dekko. Seniors Hannah Johnson (Incline Village, Nev.) and Sierra Ryder (Orinda, Calif.) were 28th and 29th, respectively, in 1:5.14 and 1:55.37. Mueller, West and Johnson combined to put Bates in fifth place out of 13 women's teams in the event.

Tagert Muller's combined time of 1:47.15 was 0.03 seconds behind Vermont's Raphael Quenneville for 19th place in the men's slalom. His second run of 53.06 was the 13th-fastest out of 61 competitors.

First-years Calvin Wilson (Canyon Dam, Calif.) and Joe Gillis (Branford, Conn.) placed 42nd (1:50.78) and 43rd (1:50.91) to round out the Bates men's scoring.

Bates' Nordic and alpine ski teams combined for a season-best seventh-place finish among 17 teams at the Dartmouth Carnival, with 365 team points.

Bates heads to the Williams Carnival next weekend, at Jiminy Peak in Hancock, Vt.
