West, Gillis pace alpine skiers in giant slalom at UNH Carnival

FRANCONIA, N.H. -- Sophomore Hannah West placed 14th out of 73 competitors in the women's giant slalom, leading the Bates alpine ski teams on the first day of the UNH Carnival Friday at Cannon Mountain.

West (Bend, Ore.) had a two-run combined time of 2:17.18 en route to tying for her third-best EISA carnival result. Junior Griffin Mueller (West Vail, Colo.) placed 28th (2:24.82) and junior Annabel Mahon (Toorak, Australia) rounded out team scoring in 40th place (2:33.21).

The Bates women's 46 carnival points were the eighth-most among 13 teams.

Sophomore Joe Gillis (Branford, Conn.) continued his strong start to the season by placing 27th out of 72 competitors in the men's giant slalom. Gillis had a two-run combined time of 2:13.75. First-year Arie van Vuuren (Boulder, Colo.) placed 35th (2:17.37) and junior Tagert Mueller (West Vail, Colo.) placed 39th (2:17.72) to cap the team scoring.

The Bates Nordic and alpine ski teams combined to score 186 carnival points on Friday, putting them in 10th place out of 15 teams. Slalom races take place Saturday.
