Cooper, women's alpine fare well in Dartmouth Carnival slaloms

LYME, N.H. -- The Bates women's alpine ski team placed three athletes in the top 28 Saturday in slalom races at the Dartmouth Carnival, while junior Michael Cooper placed 22nd in the men's slalom.

Junior captain Griffin Mueller (West Vail, Colo.) finished her first run in 54.68 seconds and her second in 52.82, 20th fastest in the field. Her combined time of 1:47.50 put her 0.01 behind New Hampshire's Lisa Olsson for 19th place.

First-year Tess Coutu (Foster, R.I.) was one place behind Mueller in 24th at 1:47.54, and sophomore Hannah West (Bend, Ore.) placed 28th at 1:47.72. The Bates women scored the seventh-most carnival points among 12 teams, with 53, seven ahead of New Hampshire.

Cooper (Alta, Calif.) had a combined time of 1:39.80 to place 22nd out of 62 in the men's slalom. Sophomore Max Schneider (Rottach-Egern, Germany) and junior Ryan Clermont (Lincoln, N.H.) also scored team points for the Bobcats, finishing in a tie for 43rd place (1:42.62) and in 45th place (1:42.81), respectively.

Friday's scheduled giant slalom races were postponed to Sunday, Feb. 17. With that one event remaining in the Dartmouth Carnival, Bates' combined Nordic and alpine teams are in eighth place among 15 teams, with 356 carnival points.

The Bates alpine teams next compete in the Middlebury Carnival, Feb. 15-16 at the Middlebury Snowbowl in Hancock, Vt.
