HANCOCK, Vt. -- Bates women's alpine skiing captain Griffin Mueller matched her career-best carnival performance by finishing seventh out of 71 competitors in the slalom Friday at the Middlebury Carnival.

Mueller (West Vail, Colo.) recorded a two-run combined time of 1:45.77, good for 35 carnival points and 36 NCAA points. Her seventh-place finish matches her performance in the slalom at the Colby Carnival last season for the best of her career.

Sophomore Hannah West (Bend, Ore.) netted another top-30 finish, coming in 23rd with a two-run combined time of 1:48.03, good for 20 carnival points and eight NCAA points. Mueller and West combined for 55 carnival points, good for eighth out of 13 teams even though no other Bates skiers finished both their runs.

On the men's side, captain Michael Cooper (Alta, Calif.) led the way, finishing in a tie for 27th out of 66 skiers with a two-run combined time of 1:40.99. Cooper earned 20 carnival points and four NCAA points. Sophomore Joe Gillis (Branford, Conn.) also recorded carnival points for the Bobcats, finishing in 43rd with a two-run combined time of 1:43.64. Gillis' four carnival points gave the Bates men 24 and the Bates men and women a combined total of 79.

Combined with the Bates Nordic team, the Bobcats sit in 8th place out of 15 schools following the first day of action at the Middlebury Carnival. The alpine skiing team competes in the giant slalom on Saturday.
