BANGOR, Maine -- Husson University pitching allowed only five hits and one walk on the way to a 5-1 non-conference victory over the Bates College baseball team on Wednesday, in the Bobcats' first game in Maine this season.

Bates (4-5) sophomore Dan Trulli (Melrose, Mass.) hit a pinch-hit home run in the top of the ninth to account for the Bobcats' lone run.

Bates' first-year starting pitcher, Nolan Collins (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.), faced the minimum three batters in three of his first four innings before running into some trouble in the fifth. Husson got on the board in the second inning as Ryan Rebar hit a leadoff triple and scored on a groundout.

The Bobcats had runners on second and third with one out in the third inning, with one-out hits by seniors Ryan McCarthy (Plaistow, N.H.) and John Dinucci (West Hartford, Conn.), but Husson starter Ryan Allender (1-1) worked out of the jam, striking out senior Brendan Fox (West Hartford, Conn.) and getting senior Brendon Canavan (Carlisle, Mass.) to fly out.

Husson (6-5) then scored three runs in the fifth, leading off with singles by Sam Huston and Christian Corneil, who both came home on a double by Luke Covey. Logan Rogerson advanced Covey to third with an infield single and Cam Archer singled home Covey with the Eagles' fifth hit in a row. Junior righthander Andrew Freeman (Newton, Mass.) came on in relief and got out of the jam with a strikeout and a groundout.

Husson added a run in the sixth off of Freeman, as Rogerson singled home Huston for a 5-0 lead.

Trulli entered the game with one out in the top of the ninth and belted his second home run this season off of Husson reliever Steven Hanscom. Trulli leads the Bobcats in homers and RBIs (9).

Collins (0-1) was charged with four runs, all earned, in 4 1/3 innings while striking out five batters. Bates senior Robert Jones (South Berwick, Maine), first-year Cameron Carlson (Tampa, Fla.) and first-year Mark Russell (Westford, Mass.) combined on 2 1/3 shutout innings of relief pitching.

Bates will play at Colby on Thursday at 4pm to begin both teams' first NESCAC East Division series of the season. The teams will then square off in a doubleheader this weekend at Colby -- Bates will be the nominal home team for the games, which are currently scheduled for Saturday beginning at noon.
