MEDFORD, Mass. -- Senior Justin Foley earned a six-inning win and senior Alex Simon picked up a tough save as the Bates baseball team defeated Tufts 6-5 in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday, to earn a victory in the Bobcats' first NESCAC East Division series of the season. Tufts won the seven-inning first game 4-2.

Bates (6-8, 1-2 NESCAC East) junior Jack Arend (Newfields, N.H.), sophomore Noah Loughlin (Mililani, Hawaii) and junior Jon Lindgren (Plainville, Conn.) collected three hits apiece in the nightcap and senior Justin White (Whitesboro, N.Y.) had two runs and two hits.

Tufts (11-3, 2-1) pitchers Brent Greeley, Steven Landry and Spencer Langdon limited the Bobcats to four hits in the first game. Greeley (3 IP, 2 H, 0 ER) improved to 3-0 with the victory, while Langdon (2 IP, 0 H, 0R) picked up his third save.

Tufts got up 2-0 on Bates first-year starter Jared Pantalony (Brooklyn, N.Y.) in the second inning. Ryan Day was hit by a pitch and scored on a wild pitch, then Speros Varinos singled home a run. The Jumbos added two more in the third. Peter DeMaria hit an infield single with one out and went to second on an error during the play. He scored on Harrison Frickman's double to right. Frickman then came around on the Bobcats' second error of the inning during a base hit by Day.

Bates narrowed the margin to 4-1 with an unearned run in the fourth. Junior Giovanni Torres (North Haven, Conn.) walked with one out, took second on a Jumbo error and scored on first-year Andrew Chi's (Closter, N.J.) single. The Bobcats rallied with two outs in the fifth to get within two. Arend singled and scored when White followed with a double, making it 4-2.

Langdon and Bates senior Brendan Smith (Hingham, Mass.; 3 IP, 1 H, 0R) were good in late relief. Tufts twice had the bases loaded with two outs on Smith, but he got the outs he needed. He allowed just one hit in his three innings. Langdon struck out three in two frames.

Varinos went 3 for 3 with an RBI as Tufts out-hit Bates 8-4 in the first game. DeMaria finished 2 for 2.

Bates led 6-1 in the second game and held on to win 6-5. The Bobcats outhit the Jumbos 12-9.

White's ground out scored sophomore Christian Beal (Flossmoor, Ill.), who had led off the game with a single, in the first. Lindgren doubled home Torres to give Bates a 2-0 lead in the second. Bates then struck for three in the top of the third to lead 5-0. Loughlin doubled home a run and scored. After Tufts scored a single run in the third, Bates increased the margin to 6-1 in the fifth as White singled and scored on a sac fly.

Tufts began chipping away, getting two in the fifth thanks to back-to-back doubles by Frickman and Will Shackelford. They closed to within 6-5 on unearned runs in the sixth and seventh, including an RBI single from Nate Bozzella in the sixth.

Simon came on and ended the threat Tufts, getting a key double-play ball in the eighth.
