HADLEY, Mass. -- Bates first-year Antonio Jareno captured NESCAC Baseball Player of the Week honors on Monday, as announced by the New England Small College Athletic Conference, after his stellar hitting in a 3-2 week for the Bobcats.
Jareno (Marietta, Ga.) was the offensive hero of Bates' 5-2 victory over Trinity on Saturday, hitting a solo home run in the fourth inning and doubling home the go-ahead run in the eighth inning.
Starting one game at shortstop and four at second base, Jareno had multiple hits in all five games of a 3-2 week, batting .478 with three doubles, one home run, one stolen base, three runs scored, a slugging percentage of .739 and five RBIs.
Jareno leads Bates in batting average (.444) and slugging percentage (.667).
He becomes Bates' first NESCAC Baseball Player of the Week since Nate Pajka on May 4, 2015. He is Bates' first rookie ever to win a NESCAC weekly award since they were first issued in 2001.
