LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates baseball team is one win away from another NESCAC tournament bid after sweeping Colby in a doubleheader Sunday at Leahey Field. Bates took game one 3-0 and won game two 7-2.
The Bobcats (17-13, 7-3 NESCAC East) need to split a doubleheader with Bowdoin on Saturday, May 4 to clinch their third consecutive appearance in the NESCAC tournament.
Game One: Bates 3, Colby 0
Senior Justin Foley tossed a complete game shutout and the Bobcats scored three runs in the fourth inning to defeat the Mules 3-0 in game one of Sunday's doubleheader.
Foley (Lynnfield, Mass.) struck out six batters and did not walk anyone to pick up his fifth win of the season.
On offense, Bates supported Foley (5-2) with a big fourth inning against Colby starter Emery Dinsmore (1-3), who also went the distance on the mound for the Mules.
With two outs and nobody on in the bottom of the fourth, sophomore Christian Beal (Flossmoor, Ill.) singled to left field. He stole second base and first-year Bryan Gotti (Westwood, Mass.) singled him home. First-year Antonio Jareno (Marietta, Ga.) doubled Gotti to third and sophomore Noah Loughlin (Mililani, Hawaii) delivered a huge pinch-hit two-RBI single to extend the Bates lead to 3-0.
Both pitchers performed well in game one, with Foley holding the Mules to four hits and Dinsmore limiting Bates to five hits. The Bobcats made a pair of errors and Colby committed one error in the contest.
The Mules left seven runners on base as Foley worked out of a number of jams. In the top of the fifth, the Mules put runners on second and third with only one away. Foley got a pop out and a strike out to end the inning.
He retired the side in order in the sixth and worked around a two-out single in the seventh.
Jareno and Colby's Matt Mitchell both recorded doubles in the contest. Neither team drew a walk.
Game Two: Bates 7, Colby 2
The Bobcats scored a run in the first, two runs in the second and three runs in the third and never trailed in a 7-2 win over the Mules in game two of Sunday's doubleheader.
Junior Miles Michaud (Madison, Conn.) tossed three innings of shutout baseball out of the bullpen to earn the win for Bates. Michaud (2-2) relieved senior starting pitcher Brendan Smith (Hingham, Mass.), who allowed two runs on three hits over four innings pitched.
Bates jumped on Colby starter Patrick Carbone (1-3) in the bottom of the first. Junior captain Jack Arend (Newfields, N.H.) singled with one away and he advanced to second on a ground out. Arend stole third and scored on an error to give the Bobcats the 1-0 lead.
Junior Will Sylvia (Newton, Mass.) singled to start the second and he promptly stole second base. Sylvia was eliminated from the bases on a fielder's choice but first-year Kevin Lucey (Topsfield, Mass.) followed with a single of his own. With two outs, senior Justin White (Whitesboro, N.Y.) singled home two runs and Bates led 3-0.
Arend led off the third inning and walked. He stole second and Beal got hit by a pitch. An error allowed two runs to score and Sylvia added a sacrifice fly, making the score 6-0 in favor of the Bobcats.
Taimu Ito singled home two runs in the fourth to get Colby on the board. But Bates answered with another run in the fifth.
With one away, Gotti doubled to right. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and with two down junior Giovanni Torres (North Haven, Conn.) singled him home.
