WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Bates baseball team lost 9-4 to Roger Williams University on Thursday in a neutral-site game played at Brandeis University. The game was added to the schedule on Wednesday, and as a mid-week, non-conference contest it featured 10 Roger Williams pitchers and eight Bates pitchers.

The Bobcats (19-15) will next play in Game 1 of the four-team NESCAC Championship tournament at Colby, against Williams College on Friday at 2:30pm.

RWU (20-17-1) will play Salve Regina in the CCC Championship at home starting on Friday.

Bates left 11 men on base, compared to only four for RWU.

Bates scored in the first inning when first-year Bryan Gotti (Westwood, Mass) hit a sacrifice fly to score junior Jack Arend (Newfields, N.H.) for a 1-0 score.

The Hawks answered right away when Ben Bonavita hit a two-run homer off of first-year starter Ian Tolis (Madison, Conn.) to put them ahead by one. Tolis (0-1) and seven other pitchers threw one inning apiece.

In the second, Tyler Brett hit an RBI single to center field to bring in another run for a 3-1 lead.

RWU's Chris Bosco singled to left field to start off the bottom of the third inning. After stealing both second and third, he stole home when Arend threw down to second to try and get runner Danny Roth out at second on the steal attempt. Brandon Jenkins grounded out to second base and Eddy Jackson hit a single to center field to plate Joey Gulino to put the Hawks up 6-1.

In the sixth, the Hawks struck again with an RBI single from Cedeno and one from Bosco as well to add two to the scoreboard. Roth then homered in the seventh to give the Hawks a 9-1 lead.

Bates rallied for two runs in the eighth, with rookies Andrew Chi (Closter, N.J.) and Kevin Lucey (Topsfield, Mass.) delivering RBI singles to score junior Will Sylvia (Newton, Mass.) and Giovanni Torres (North Haven, Conn.), respectively.

In the ninth, sophomore Christian Beal (Flossmoor, Ill.) drove home first-year pinch runner Chris Capo (West Newbury, Mass.) with a single to right after first-year Antonio Jareno's (Marietta, Ga.) double. The hit was Beal's 50th of the season. It is the eighth 50-hit season in Bates baseball history, and the first since Ryan Sonberg in 2013.

Junior Mark Russell (Westford, Mass.) and seniors Brendan Smith (Hingham, Mass.) and Alex Simon (Windsor, Conn.) all threw scoreless innings of relief for Bates. Junior Pat Beaton (West Newbury, Mass.) went 2-3 at the plate with a walk, and Sylvia drew three walks.
