Brown, Donahue receive ECAC, NESCAC football honors

HADLEY, Mass. -- Following Saturday's 47-33 triumph over Hamilton, Bates football was recognized with two out of three of the NESCAC's Player of the Week award winners on Sunday. Sophomore outside linebacker Gilbert Brown (Gloucester, Mass.) received NESCAC Defensive Player of the Week honors, while junior placekicker Charlie Donahue (Plymouth, N.H.) was named NESCAC Special Teams Player of the Week. On Tuesday, Brown was also named ECAC Division III Northeast Region Defensive Player of the Week laurels.

It is Brown's second time receiving the NESCAC honor: he was also NESCAC Defensive POTW after Bates' win over Bowdoin in Week 7 of the 2011 season.

In yesterday's game, Brown tallied a game- and career-high 12 tackles (9 solo), and pulled off the second-longest play in Bates football history, when he picked off Hamilton quarterback Jordan Eck in Bates' end zone and ran the ball back 101 yards for a touchdown. It was Brown's third interception this season, and he set the team record for interception return yards in a season in the process, with 153.

Donahue set two Bates single-season records of his own, as he capped an outstanding season by hitting kicking two field goals in the first half of the game. Donahue booted a 28-yarder in the first quarter, followed by a career-long 34-yard field goal in the second quarter. Donahue's nine field goals tie Bates' single-season mark with the nine kicked by Don Sarason (on 13 attempts) in 1981. Donahue also established Bates' accuracy record, formerly held by Rejean Guerriero's 7-for-10 season in 1999. Donahue entered the season 1-for-2 in career field goal attempts. Two Donahue eclipsed Sarason's former single-season kicking points record (40) two weeks ago against Colby; the record now stands at 49.
