HADLEY, Mass. -- Bates junior Jon Lindgren received All-NESCAC Second Team Defense honors on Tuesday, as the New England Small College Athletic Conference announced its end-of-year awards for the 2018 football season.
Lindgren (Plainville, Conn.) led the conference in total tackles (77) and solo tackles (52). He added six tackles for a loss and two pass breakups, and ranked seventh in the league in punt returns, with a 6.4-yard average.
Lindgren joined Bates' starting lineup from the beginning of his sophomore season in 2017, after seeing little action as a freshman. He immediately made a major mark on Bates' defense with a team-high 75 tackles, ranking seventh in the NESCAC, and leading the conference in pass breakups with 12.
In a defense restructured by first-year head coach Malik Hall and first-year defensive coordinator Brandon Potvin, Lindgren continued with more of the same great play in his junior season. For the second year in a row, Lindgren started every game at safety for Bates in 2018, tallying at least six tackles in every game and posting 12 tackles three times, in games against Amherst, Trinity and Colby.
