AMHERST, Mass. -- Host and No. 19 nationally ranked Amherst defeated the Bates field hockey team 3-1 Sunday afternoon, ending the visiting Bobcats' three-game winning streak.

Bates (5-7, 2-6 NESCAC) will host Endicott College in a non-conference game Thursday at 7pm.

Amherst (8-4, 4-4 NESCAC) took a 2-0 lead after 26 minutes, as Laura Schwartzman scored an unassisted goal in the 16th minute and Franny Daniels added her 12th goal of the season at the 26:03 mark, assisted by Beth Williamson.

Bates senior Taylor Lough (Little Compton, R.I.) answered 89 seconds later on a penalty corner, assisted by junior Grace Fitzgerald (Larchmont, N.Y.), to cut the Mammoths' lead in half. The goal is the seventh of the season for Lough, her fourth in the past three games and the 27th of her career. The assist was Fitzgerald's seventh this season.

Amherst added an insurance goal and returned the lead to two goals less than three minutes into the second half, with Beth Williamson feeding Natalie Hobbs on her fourth goal of the season.

Amherst held a slight edge in shots (12-9) and penalty corners (6-4). First-year Ellie Bauer (Denver, Colo.) made four saves in her fifth start for the Bobcats and Katie Savage turned away seven shots for the Mammoths.
