Men's golf finishes ninth at NESCAC Fall Qualifier

AMHERST, Mass. -- Senior Jared Quenzel (West Hartford, Conn.) shot a team-best 78 on Sunday to lead the Bates men's golf team, as the Bobcats finished ninth among 10 teams at the NESCAC Golf Championship Fall Qualifier, hosted by Amherst College at par 72 Hickory Ridge Golf Club.

Quenzel's two-day score of 159 also led Bates, and was good for 23rd place among 50 golfers overall. Fellow senior Corey Gingras (Eastford, Conn.) followed his 80 on Saturday with an 83 on Sunday to tie for 33rd place overall at 163. Sophomore Garret Bonney (Sudbury, Mass.) shot an 82 on Sunday to for 37th at 165, and senior Kevin Shaughnessy (Ridgefield, Conn.) finished at 173 to round out Bates scoring.

The Bobcats' two-day score of 660 was 10 strokes behind eighth-place Tufts, but 30 strokes better than 10th-place Wesleyan. Trinity won the tournament at 592, led by medalist Greg Palmer's 147. Williams (607), Hamilton (611) and Middlebury (613) rounded out the top four teams. The highest finisher at the two-day, 36-hole event earns the right to host the spring championship round at its home course along with the remaining top three teams from the qualifier.
