Men's golf in second out of 10 teams on first day of Maine State Championships

AUBURN, Maine -- The Bates men's golf team stood in second place out of 10 teams Saturday at the halfway point of the Maine Men's State Championship, hosted by the Bobcats at Martindale Country Club.

Husson (289) holds a commanding 20-stroke lead, but Bates is second at 309, four strokes ahead of third-place Southern Maine (313). St. Joseph's (318), Colby (323), UMaine-Farmington (325), Bowdoin (326), Thomas (329), the University of New England (329) and Maine Maritime (335) round out the field.

Senior Spencer Pierce (Winnetka, Ill.) shot a 3-over-par 74 to tie for fifth place out of 50 individuals with two other players. Sophomore Andrew Garcia-Bou (Eastchester, N.Y.) tied for eighth place at 76, sophomore Julien Lewin (Seattle, Wash.) tied for 10th place at 77, and seniors Matt Marcus (Newton, Mass.) and Bennett Saltzman (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) tied for 24th place (82) to round out Bates' scoring.

The tournament will conclude on Sunday, with play beginning at 10am.
