AUBURN, Maine -- The Bates men's golf team placed its top four golfers all inside the top 24 out of 50 individuals overall and claimed second place at the two-day Maine State Championships, hosted by the Bobcats at Martindale Country Club.

The second-place finish is Bates' best in the tournament since at least 2005, a span that includes two third-place showings. Records prior to 2005 are unavailable.

Husson led all teams with a two-day, four-player combined score of 591. Bates followed at 630, a stroke ahead of Colby (631). Bowdoin (635) was fourth, followed by Southern Maine (638), Maine Maritime (644), St. Joseph's (645), UMaine-Farmington (647), University of New England (649), and Thomas (662).

Bates sophomore Julien Lewin (Seattle, Wash.) shot back-to-back 6-over-par rounds of 77 to place 11th, one spot out of reaching top 10 and all-state honors. Lewin shot two birdies and eight pars and avoided any double-bogeys in his consistent round on Sunday.

Senior Spencer Pierce (Winnetka, Ill.) followed up his stellar round of 74 on Saturday with an 83 on Sunday, tying for 13th place with a two-day score of 157. Pierce eagled the par-5 18th hole on Saturday but triple-bogeyed the same hole on Sunday.

Senior Bennett Saltzman (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) tied for 20th place with an overall score of 160, including a 78 on Sunday despite a triple-bogey on the third hole.

Sophomore Andrew Garcia-Bou (Eastchester, N.Y.) rounded out the team scoring in a tie for 24th place overall, carding an 86 on Sunday after his 76 on Saturday. Garcia-Bou made par on 12 out of 18 holes Saturday and birdied the eighth.

The Bates men will compete in the Husson Invitational on Saturday at Penobscot Valley Country Club in Orono.
