BREWSTER, Mass. -- Senior Spencer Pierce shot a 1-over-par 73 to tie for third place out of 94 individuals on the first day of the 83rd New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) Championships Sunday at The Captains Course. Pierce (Winnetka, Ill.) led the Bobcats to 10th place out of 19 teams at the halfway point of the tournament, which concludes Monday.
Bates has a chance for a significant improvement from finishing 20th at the tournament in each of the past two years.
Sophomore Julien Lewin (Seattle, Wash.) was Bates' next best player on the day, shooting an 81 to tie for 42nd place. Senior Bennett Saltzman (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) tied for 55th with an 82 and sophomore Andrew Garcia-Bou (Eastchester, N.Y.) shot an 84 to tie for 64th place.
Bates' top four players combined for a first-round score of 320, three strokes ahead of 11th-place Salem State (323) and eight strokes behind ninth-place Tufts (312). Husson leads at 298.
