AUBURN, Maine -- The Bates women's golf team hosted the Bobcat Invitational Sunday at Fox Ridge Golf Club, taking third place out of four teams for the second straight tournament.
Bates recorded a four-player combined score of 408 on the par-72 course, defeating fourth-place Trinity (424) by 16 strokes. Bowdoin won at 362, followed by Husson at 388.
"I am proud of the effort and surprised by the solid results of our women today," said head coach James Upham. "We have had a limited practice schedule since school started Wednesday so to put this performance together today was excellent."
Sophomore Brittany Seipp (Glen Head, N.Y.) shot a 94 to lead the Bobcats for the second time in as many days. Sophomore Eleanor Murphy (Schwenksville, Pa.) followed in eighth place with a 97, and sophomore Andrea Hepfinger (Madison, Wis.) placed ninth with a 99. First-year Eleanor Garnett (Old Greenwich, Conn.) carded a 118 to finish 17th out of 19 players.
"I have to be really appreciative of our first-year, Ellie Garnett," said Upham. "She improved her scores from yesterday, which very few were able to do, and has overcome some rookie jitters. It is a good sign of mental toughness."
Bates plays in the Maine State Championships next weekend at Bangor Municipal Country Club.
