Haugh leads men's golf at UMF Invitational

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Sophomore Preston Haugh shot a 9-over-par 79 to lead the Bates men's golf team to eighth place out of 10 teams Saturday at the UMF Invitational, played at Waterville Country Club.

Bates' four-man combined score of 329 trailed seventh-place Maine Maritime by three strokes and landed the Bobcats six strokes ahead of ninth-place University of New England. Southern Maine won the tournament at an even 300.

Haugh's (Alexandria, Va.) 79 put him in 15th place among 49 individuals in the tournament. Senior captain Liam McLoughlin (New Smyrna Beach, Fla.) followed for the Bobcats in a tie for 22nd place with an 81. Junior James Stevens (North Kingstown, R.I.) shot an 84 to tie for 32nd place and first-year Jack Howard (Pelham, N.Y.) tied for 34th place at 85. First-year Spencer Silvernail (Lake Forest, Ill.) was a stroke behind Howard at 86.
