BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Senior captain Andrew Garcia-Bou is in a three-way tie for second place among 75 players, leading the Bates men's golf team to fifth place among 14 teams through the first day of the Bowdoin Invitational.
Meanwhile, led by a pair of first-year players, Bates women's golf team is in second out of four teams in the women's Bowdoin Invitational.
Garcia-Bou (Eastchester, N.Y.) shot a 3-over-par 75 at Brunswick Golf Club, carding two birdies against five bogeys, with no double-bogeys. He is tied with Southern Maine's Brendan Croteau and Nichols' Colby Mitchell, one stroke behind overall leader Brendan Donovan of Saint Joseph's.
The Bobcats carded a four-man combined score of 324, fifth-best out of 14 competing teams, and trailing only Nichols (314), Bowdoin (317), Providence (317) and USM (319) while sitting a stroke ahead of Colby, Endicott, St. Joe's and the University of New England.
After Garcia-Bou, sophomore Preston Haugh (Alexandria, Va.) shot an 80 to tie for 18th place, followed by senior James Stevens (North Kingstown, R.I.) in a tie for 38th place at 83 and both senior Julien Lewin (Seattle, Wash.) and senior Nick Beati (Chelmsford, Mass.) tying for 43rd place with 86's.
The Bates women combined to shoot 368, leading both Husson (373) and Trinity (421) while trailing Bowdoin (332). First-year Chloe Baylor (Lincoln, Neb.) led the Bobcats on the first day of the tournament with a 14-over 86, fifth best out of 20 individuals. First-year Sora Park (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) is tied for sixth place at 90, while junior Ellie Murphy (Schwenksville, Pa.) is tied for ninth (94) and junior Brittany Seipp (Glen Head, N.Y.) is in 12th place at 98.
