WAYLAND, Mass. -- Senior captain Julien Lewin shot a second-day, even-par score of 72, leading the Bates men's golf team to a seventh-place finish out of 10 teams on the second day of the NESCAC Championship Fall Qualifier at Sandy Burr Country Club. Lewin earned an individual invitation to play in the NESCAC Men's Golf Championship in the spring.
Bates' two-day, four-man combined score of 620 was good for seventh place out of 10 teams, 10 strokes ahead of eighth-place Wesleyan and 10 strokes behind sixth-place Amherst.
The top four teams at the qualifier and the top four individuals outside of the top four teams will advance to the 2020 NESCAC Men's Golf Championship set for April 25-26, 2020. Williams, the team with the top score of 586 over the two-day, 36-hole qualifier earned the right to host the championship. Tufts (588), Hamilton (595) and Trinity (597) also qualified.
Lewin (Seattle, Wash.) followed his 78 on Saturday with the 72, tied for the fourth-best round on the day, to finish in a six-way tie for 12th place among 50 players. Lewin carded six birdies on the day.
Individuals outside the top four teams who earned at-large invitations were Jordan Besselel, Phinneas Choukas and Jeffrey Giguere of Middlebury, Cameron Clark of Amherst, and Lewin.
Sophomore Jack Howard (Pelham, N.Y.) carded a 77 Saturday and a 79 Sunday to place second on the Bobcats at 156, tying for 33rd place overall. Junior Preston Haugh (Alexandria, Va.) tied for 36th place at 157 after shooting a 75 on Sunday, and senior captain Andrew Garcia-Bou (Eastchester, N.Y.) tied for 39th place at 158, including a first-day round of 76. First-year Patrick Bergin (Longmeadow, Mass.) finished 44th at 167 and was Bates' fourth scorer on Sunday, carding an 81.
Bates will play in the CBB Tournament against Bowdoin and Colby on Saturday at Brunswick Golf Club.
