Bates men rip St. Joseph's for ninth straight win, 68-54

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College men's basketball team overpowered St. Joseph's College of Maine 68-54 in a non-league game Tuesday night, outrebounding the Monks 41-30 and outscoring them on second-chance points 22-3.


The Bobcats are now 12-2, with a nine-game win streak dating back to Nov. 30.

Junior Rob Stockwell (Temple, N.H.) led Bates with game highs of 17 points and 10 rebounds, and a team-high three assists. Sophomore Bryan Wholey (Marshfield, Mass.) added 16 points and eight rebounds, and junior Zak Ray (Bangor, Maine) chipped in with 10.

R. J. Mattison came off the bench to lead St. Joseph's (8-5) with 12 points. The Monks were held to 36.4 percent shooting from the floor, including 26.9 percent in the first half, as Bates built a 30-17 halftime advantage.

With a pair of 3-pointers by first-year reserve Scott Place (Bridgewater, Mass.) sandwiched by treys from Stockwell and Ray, the lead grew steadily to 59-32, until a pair of threes by Chad Pulkkinen began a late surge by St. Joseph's.

Elbie Murphy scored six points with a team-high eight rebounds, five steals and two blocks for the Monks.
