Bates men score comeback win over Trinity University

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Junior forward Rob Stockwell had game highs of 24 points and 13 rebounds to lead Bates College to a 63-57 victory over Trinity University of Texas on New Year's Day in the opening round of the Holiday Inn-Naismith Classic at Springfield College.

Bates (7-2) won its fourth game in a row and will play in the tournament championship game Monday at 7:30 p.m. against Springfield, which defeated Colby-Sawyer 88-70 in the opening round.

Bates never led until Stockwell's jumpshot with 2:24 left in regulation put the Bobcats ahead 58-57. Trinity led 35-27 at halftime and held a 10-point advantage at 46-36 with 15 minutes left to play, until a pair of Stockwell free throws and a 3-pointer by junior Zak Ray cut the deficit to five. Trinity was held scoreless over the final 5 minutes and 51 seconds of the game.

Stockwell (Temple, N.H.) and Ray (Bangor, Maine), who scored 18 points to go with three assists and five steals, combined to score 42 of Bates' 63 points. The Bobcats shot just 36.8 percent from the floor in their first game since Dec. 6.

Ross Burt led Trinity (7-3) with 17 points, while Andy Bates added 13 points and team highs of six rebounds, four assists, six blocked shots and two steals.
