LEWISTON, Maine -- Junior Tom Coyne scored a game-high 24 points and the Bates men's basketball team led No. 3 nationally ranked Williams by as many as 14 points in the first half but the Ephs rallied in the second half to defeat the Bobcats by a final score of 75-69 Saturday afternoon.

Bates (4-12, 1-3 NESCAC) bothered the Ephs (15-0, 4-0 NESCAC) with a 1-3-1 zone defense throughout the game, causing 15 turnovers. The Bobcats converted the Ephs' 15 turnovers into 21 points. Bates turned it over nine times themselves but the Ephs only converted three points off turnovers.

Coyne (Falmouth, Maine) made 7-11 threes, scoring 18 of his 24 points in the second half. In the first half, the Bobcats turned in a balanced performance, with first-year Andrew Snoddy (Stow, Mass.) scoring eight of his 12 points.

With the Bobcats trailing 8-6, junior Jeff Spellman (Boston, Mass.) hit a three to give Bates its first lead of the game at the 15:45 mark of the first half. Spellman's three was followed by a Williams turnover and a Snoddy layup. The Ephs trimmed the lead to 11-10 on a pair of James Heskett free throws. Then the Bobcats went on a 10-0 run, sparked by four points from senior captain Max Hummel (Glastonbury, Conn.) and threes from senior captain Brandon Galloway (Fort Washington, Md.) and Coyne.

Later in the first half, Galloway and Coyne hit back-to-back threes to put the Bobcats up 34-20 with 3:05 remaining, their biggest lead of the game.

But the Ephs answered in a big way. They ended the first half on a 7-0 run to cut the Bates lead in half. Then they opened the second half on a 5-0 run to trim the Bobcats' advantage to 34-32.

A Snoddy layup extended the lead to four. Then Bobby Casey hit a three to get the Ephs to within one points at 36-35 with 17:13 to go in regulation.

Henry Feinberg hit a three to put Williams up two with 16:07 left; then Spellman hit a pair of free throws to tie the game at 38. Another Casey three put Williams ahead for good with 15:35 remaining.

The Bobcats kept it close for most of the second half, with Spellman hitting a jumper to trim the Williams lead to 55-52 with 7:54 to go in the game. But Casey immediately answered on the other end. A Coyne three with 6:02 left made the score 60-55. Then the Ephs went on a 8-0 run to essentially put the game away.

The difference in the game proved to be second chance points. Williams pulled down 47 rebounds to Bates' 34. The Ephs recorded 17 second chance points and Bates scored seven.

Casey paced Williams with 23 points on 8-14 shooting, grabbing six rebounds and dishing out five assists. Kyle Scadlock scored 15 points and tallied nine rebounds. Heskett added 14 points and Marc Taylor provided a spark off the bench with 11 points on 3-3 shooting.

For Bates, Spellman tallied 15 points, eight rebounds, a game-high seven assists and two steals. Snoddy recorded a pair of rebounds, two assists and two steals to go along with his 12 points. Senior captain Nick Lynch (Westford, Mass.) hauled in a game-high 11 rebounds.
