LEWISTON, Maine -- Wednesday night's highly anticipated men's lacrosse showdown, pitting 8-1 and No. 6 nationally ranked Bates against 7-1 and 13th-ranked Bowdoin, lived up to its billing for three quarters, before the Polar Bears outscored the Bobcats 7-3 in the final, snowy 15 minutes for a 14-10 victory at Garcelon Field.
Brett Kujala scored three of his five goals in the final quarter and Clayton Wright had one of his two goals and both of his assists in the final period. On two occasions in the quarter, Bowdoin compounded one of its goals with another score seven seconds later, right after lightning-quick faceoff wins by first-year Sam Carlin. Their final three goals all came in a span of 29 seconds, between the 4:01 and 3:32 marks.
Bates (8-2, 4-2 NESCAC) outshot Bowdoin (8-1, 5-1) 14-9 in the period and 47-35 for the game, but Bowdoin junior goalie Peter Mumford made six of his season-high 20 saves in the period as the Polar Bears pulled away.
Bates converted a season-low 10 percent (1-of-10) of its extra-man opportunities, with missed opportunities including shots that caromed off the pipe and out of bounds and a crease violation.
First-year Mitchell Drake (Annapolis, Md.) made his second career start in goal for Bates, in place of injured senior Joe Faria (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.), making eight saves.
Senior Jack Allard (Ridgewood, N.J.) scored the game's only man-up goal with 9:49 left in the fourth, and followed that with a score at 5:04 from a cross-zone pass by junior Kyle Weber (Chagrin Falls, Ohio), closing the gap to 11-9. But Kujala scored with 4:01 to go on a Wright assist, and the Polar Bears slammed the door on the Bobcats seconds later, as Carlin scooped the ground ball out of the faceoff, bolted upfield and passed to Matthis Wieczorek, who found Kujala open by the left post for a finish and a 13-9 lead.
Daniel Buckman's goal 22 seconds later made it 14-9. Bates got off several shots in a desperate comeback attempt, but only junior Jake Walsh's (Baltimore, Md.) with 1:35 remaining connected.
Junior Charlie Fay (Falmouth, Maine) led Bates with three goals and two assists, while Allard tallied three scores. Fay's spectacular behind the back pass to Allard on the final score of the third quarter tied the game at 7-7.
Bates also tied the game going into the second half, at 5-5, when sophomore Clarke Jones (Pepper Pike, Ohio) finished a pass from junior Andrew Melvin (Medfield, Mass.) with 0.5 seconds left in the second quarter.
Junior Sam Francis (Newburyport, Mass.) won 16 of 24 faceoffs for Bates, and junior Fred Ulbrick (Fairfield, Conn.) made three solo defensive takeaways.
