MEDFORD, Mass. -- The Bates men's soccer team scored twice in the opening 13 minutes and coasted to a 5-0 non-conference victory at Fisher College Wednesday night.M
Sophomore Beaufils Kimpolo-Pene (Bronx, N.Y.) scored two goals for the Bobcats, while senior Nate Merchant (Los Angeles, Calif.) scored a goal with two assists and sophomore Peder Bakken (Seattle, Wash.) added one goal and one assist in the victory.
Bates (6-5-2) outshot Fisher (4-8-1) by a 32-8 margin, and had a 5-0 edge in corner kicks.
Kimpolo-Pene got Bates on the board in the eighth minute with an assist from junior Drew Munoz (Dallas, Texas). Less than five minutes later, Merchant fed Bakken to make it 2-0, a lead Bates carried into intermission. Merchant now has four goals and four assists this season, and is second on the Bobcats in points (12).
Twenty-eight seconds into the second half, sophomore Eric Opoku (Accra, Ghana) converted Bakken's assist into his third goal this season. Then in the 53rd minute, Merchant fed Kimpolo-Pene for the 4-0 Bates lead. The goal was Kimpolo-Pene's fifth this season, pulling him into a tie for the team lead with Merchant for the moment.
Merchant then scored his sixth goal this season, and the 18th in his career, in the 74th minute, unassisted. Merchant leads the Bobcats with 17 points.
Sophomore Owen Lindenfeldar (Pennington, N.J.) made his first career start in goal for Bates and recorded two saves in 66 minutes, combining with sophomore Nathaniel Reed (Petoskey, Mich.) on the shutout. Falcons goalie Felipe Barandiaran made nine saves and allowed four goals, giving way to Christopher Garcia, who made three saves and allowed Merchant's tally.
Bates plays its final home game of the season Saturday against Middlebury, starting at 2pm.
