BIDDEFORD, Maine -- First-year Ciaran Bardong scored his second goal of the season and senior Ben Lyons added a goal of his own to lead the Bates men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over the University of New England Tuesday night at Blue Storm Stadium.
"The guys knew this game was about them and their response to a disappointing result last Saturday," Bates head coach Tyler Sheikh said. "I think we're pleased with the result of a road win mid-week match under the lights."
The Bobcats (2-1) outshot the Nor'easters (1-3) by a count of 24-7 on the evening. Bates forced UNE goalkeeper Will Shearon to make 11 saves while senior goalkeeper Robbie Montanaro (Belmont, Mass.) only had to make two saves for Bates.
In the 37th minute, the Bobcats struck first when senior captain Drew Munoz (Dallas, Texas) delivered a set piece from 30 yards out that Bardong (Manhasset, N.Y.) headed in to put Bates up 1-0.
Bates led 1-0 at halftime and a pair of seniors helped the Bobcats put the game away in the 83rd minute.
Senior Aleks Marceau (Newton, Mass.) found Lyons (San Rafael, Calif.) with a cross from the opposite side and the midfielder converted for the third goal of his career.
The Bobcats look to even their record in NESCAC play when they visit Tufts this Saturday. The match gets underway at 2:30pm.
"We can still improve and individual performances from top players can improve," Sheikh said. "We look forward to seeing those performances against Tufts Saturday."
