MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- Senior captain Coley Cannon won a thrilling match at the No. 4 position but the No. 18 nationally ranked Bates men's squash team fell 8-1 at No. 20 Middlebury on Sunday.

Cannon (Greenwich, Conn.) went up 2-0 against Middlebury's Nick Bermingham by winning the first two games by counts of 12-10 and 11-8. But Bermingham rallied and evened the match at two games apiece. Then Cannon won the fifth and deciding game 11-9 to secure the 3-2 (12-10, 11-8, 5-11, 5-11, 11-9) victory, improving his personal record to 5-3 on the season.

The Panthers (7-2) took an early 3-0 lead but the Bobcats (3-5) made them earn it. At the No. 3 position, it took Jack Kagan four games to defeat sophomore Omar Attia (Cairo, Egypt) 3-1 (11-7, 7-11, 11-5, 11-9) and at the No. 9 position first-year Dylan Muldoon (Devonshire, Bermuda) fell in four games 3-1 (5-11, 12-10, 11-6, 11-5) to Middlebury's Alex Merrill.

Later in the match, junior Benni McComish (Williamstown, Mass.) gave Thomas Wolpow all he could handle in a 3-2 (11-3, 4-11, 11-7, 2-11, 15-13) defeat.

The Bobcats return to action Thursday at Colby for a match that begins at 6pm.
