BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Two first-years earned sweeps in their collegiate debuts but the No. 21 nationally ranked Bates men's squash team fell 5-4 at No. 25 Bowdoin Friday night.

First-years Jairaj Singh (Jaipur, India) and Sultan Hashmi (Belvedere, Calif.) impressed against the Polar Bears (1-0), winning at the No. 6 and No. 7 positions respectively.

Singh won three closely contested games in a 3-0 (11-9, 11-9, 11-8) win over Bowdoin's Gannon Leech. And Hashmi also showed the ability to win a close contest with his 3-0 (15-13, 11-9, 11-6) win over Henry Somerby.

With a couple key players missing from the lineup, sophomore Jesper Phillips (Moss, Norway) and senior Garon Rothenberg (Brooklyn, N.Y.) played higher on the ladder than usual. And both of them picked up wins. Phillips defeated Bowdoin's John Milligan 3-1 (11-8, 11-7, 9-11, 11-9) at the No. 2 position and Rothenberg earned a 3-1 (11-7, 11-3, 9-11, 12-10) win over Carson Claar at the No. 3 position.

But Bowdoin won the other five matches, breaking the Bobcats' 29-match winning streak against the Polar Bears.

The Bobcats (0-1) look to bounce back Saturday when they host Vassar at 3pm.
