No. 21 men's squash bounces back with 9-0 win over Vassar in home opener

LEWISTON, Maine -- The No. 21 nationally ranked Bates men's squash team swept all nine matches on the way to a 9-0 win over No. 35 Vassar Saturday afternoon at the Bates Squash Center.

Bates (1-1) didn't allow more than five points in a single game to the Brewers (4-4) in a nice bounce-back win after a tough 5-4 loss to Bowdoin on Friday.

Four Bobcats have 2-0 individual records on the young season. Sophomore Jesper Phillips (Moss, Norway) swept Milind Josh 3-0 (11-2, 11-1, 11-2) at the No. 2 position. Senior Garon Rothenberg (Brooklyn, N.Y.) rolled to a 3-0 (11-1, 11-1, 11-1) win at the No. 3 position over Henry Mitchell. First-years Jairaj Singh (Jaipur, India) and Sultan Hashmi (Belvedere, Calif.) are off to very impressive starts to their collegiate careers, having earned back-to-back 3-0 victories against their opponents from Bowdoin and Vassar respectively. Singh swept Reese Collins 3-0 (11-4, 11-3, 11-0) at the No. 6 position on Saturday and Hashmi downed Max Swan 3-0 (11-0, 11-3, 11-3) at the No. 7 position.

Senior captain Graham Bonnell (Southport, Conn.) impressed at the No. 1 position against Vassar, sweeping Sameer Mustafa 3-0 (11-2, 11-2, 11-3). Fellow seniors Benni McComish (Williamstown, Mass.) and David Quintero (Santa Barbara, Calif.) also picked up wins. McComish defeated Alex Wisneski 3-0 (11-3, 11-1, 11-2) at the No. 5 position and Quintero had no trouble beating Jonah Miles 3-0 (11-3, 11-1, 11-2) at the No. 9 position.     

Sophomore Peter Koenigsbauer (Seattle, Wash.) won 3-0 (11-3, 11-3, 11-4) at the No. 8 position over Liam Condon and first-year Jonathan Walker (Kingston, Jamaica) earned his first collegiate win, a 3-0 (11-2, 11-1, 11-5) sweep of Matthew Hein at the No. 4 position.

The Bobcats are back in action Saturday, December 7 with a road doubleheader. Bates takes on Wesleyan at 11am and Trinity at 4pm.
