LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates men's tennis concluded a strong 2017 season with two players receiving All-America recognition, announced Friday by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Junior Ben Rosen and senior Chris Ellis were named one of 21 All-America doubles teams, while Rosen also received one of 30 All-America honors in singles.
In the final Oracle/ITA DIII Men's National Doubles Rankings released June 1, Rosen (Port Washington, N.Y.) and Ellis (Shrewsbury, Mass.) ranked ninth in the country, despite not receiving an invitation to compete in the 16-team NCAA Division III Doubles Championships. Their top-10 national ranking gives them ITA All-America honors, making them the sixth All-America doubles team in program history. The Bates duo, who had been selected as the third alternate team to compete at nationals, was also ranked fifth in the Northeast Region by the ITA. They were 11-5 as a doubles team in 2017.
Rosen, meanwhile, was ranked 14th in the final ITA DIII singles player rankings, giving him All-America honors based on his top-20 ranking. He ranked third among NESCAC singles players and received a final ITA Northeast Region ranking of No. 5.
The awards represent Rosen's third career All-America honor and Ellis's second.
Rosen earned his first All-America award in 2016 for advancing to the quarterfinal round of the Division III Singles Championship. Rosen competed in the tournament again this year and fell in the Round of 32 to an eventual finalist, concluding his junior season with a 12-6 singles record at the No. 1 position for Bates.
Ellis was named an ITA All-American in doubles in 2014 after advancing to the quarterfinals at ITA Small College Nationals with former doubles partner Pierre Planche '15. Ellis was also one of 38 Bates graduates to receive the Bates Senior Scholar Award on May 28 from the Bates Department of Athletics, for four-year athletes who maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or above.
As a team, the Bobcats' successful season included their first appearance in the six-team NESCAC Championship tournament since 2013, and a final No. 19 national ranking among Division III teams.
