MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- A first-round doubles win by junior Josh Quijano and sophomore Nick Glover highlighted Bates men's tennis action at the ITA New England Regional Championships, held Friday through Sunday at Middlebury College.
Quijano (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Glover (Austin, Texas) defeated Brandon Howard and Guilherme Barbosa of Nichols College in a first-round matchup in the 36-team doubles tournament. In Saturday's Round of 16 play, Quijano and Glover fell 8-5 to Amherst's Zach Bessette and Kevin Ma.
On the other side of the doubles bracket, Bates senior captains Ben Rosen (Port Washington, N.Y.) and Josh Leiner (Baltimore, Md.), seeded fourth in the field, fell to Benjamin Battle and Carl-Herman Grant of Tufts in an 8-5 first-round match.
Rosen, who fell in a super tiebreaker to NCAA singles champion Lubomir Cuba last week in the A Singles Flight championship match at the Middlebury Invitational, also lost in his first-round singles match, with Amherst's Sean Wei prevailing 6-4, 6-3. Also in the first round, sophomore Vidyut Yadav (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) lost 6-3, 6-1 in the to Trinity's Rex Glickman, and sophomore Jacob Eisenberg (Armonk, N.Y.) gave eighth-seeded Tyler Barr of MIT a three-set battle, falling 5-7, 6-2, 6-3.
Bates next competes in the Endicott/Gordon Invitational in Beverly, Mass., Oct. 7-8.
