Quijano (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Wernink (Glen Cove, N.Y.) teamed up in doubles play to start Friday's action, falling to the Tufts combination of Nathan Niemiec and Paris Pentousis by a count of 8-4.
First-year Alex Jacobs (Short Hills, N.J.) and senior captain Duane Davis (Dix Hills, N.Y.) gave the Bowdoin combination of Larry Zhao and Evan Fortier all they could handle in an eventual 8-6 loss for the Bobcat duo.
Bates had more luck in singles play, with Wernink defeating Emerson's Maximo Lawlor by a count of 6-4, 6-3 and Quijano taking down Zhao in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Jacobs came up just short against Middlebury's Andre Xiao in three sets, 7-6, (4), 3-6, 10-5. Davis fell 6-1, 6-2 in his first round singles match to Wesleyan's Peter Anker.
Bowdoin's Jerry Jiang ended Wernink's run by a count of 6-3, 6-2. Meanwhile Quijano took eighth seed Arturo Kam of Williams College to the brink before falling 6-2, 4-6, 10-7.
Friday's action wraps up the 2018 ITA New England Regional Championship for the Bates men's tennis team. The Bobcats host the Wallach Invitational on Saturday, October 6 and Sunday, October 7.
