Men's tennis hosts Wallach Invitational, wins four matches

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates men's tennis team hosted the first day of the annual Wallach Invitational Saturday at the Wallach Tennis Center, in singles and doubles play against players from Amherst, Bowdoin, Brandeis, Colby, Skidmore, Trinity and Wheaton.

Bates players earned four wins on the day while playing in two doubles and four singles flights, including three wins in A Doubles.

First-year Pieter Wernink (Glen Cove, N.Y.) and sophomore Alex Kennedy (New York, N.Y.) got past Colby's Garrett Reiter and Max Schuermann 8-4, followed by an 8-4 defeat of Trinity's Chris Bilicic and Granville Kaynor. The Bates duo then fell 8-5 to Niko Hereford and Carl Grant of Tufts in the flight quarterfinals.

Also in the A Doubles flight, senior captains Josh Quijano (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Duane Davis (Dix Hills, N.Y.) defeated Jeremiah Ryser and Ned Roosevelt of Wheaton 8-2. They then fell in a highly competitive 8-7(9) decision to Jeff Chen and Tyler Ng of Brandeis in quarterfinals.

First-year Wilder Geier (Shaker Heights, Ohio) posted a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Suraj Mahtani of Skidmore in the C Singles Flight to reach the quarterfinals. Geier lost 6-2, 6-2 to Jack Moldenhauer of Tufts.

All six flights will continue with semifinal rounds in Sunday's action, which begins at 9am.
