Men's tennis falls 6-1 at Division II Rollins

WINTER PARK, Fla. -- The Bates College men's tennis team fell 6-1 at Division II Rollins this afternoon in its spring season opener at Bert Martin Tennis Complex. The Bobcats, who are ranked No. 24 in Division III, are now 0-1, while the Tars improve to 3-0 this season.

Bates picked up the doubles point, earning victories at Nos. 1 and 2. Rollins swept singles action to secure the overall win.

Senior Josh Quijano (Los Angeles, Calif.) and junior Jacob Kauppila (Chesterfield, Mo.) teamed up for a 6-2 triumph at the No. 1 doubles spot, topping the Tars' Ziad Melhaoui and Gai Feigin. At No. 2 doubles, junior Vidyut Yadav (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) and junior Nick Glover (Austin, Texas) paired up to defeat Nicolo De Fraia and Frederick Danielson 6-2.

Quijano and Yadav battled their Rollins opponents, stretching their singles matches to three sets at Nos. 1 and 3, respectively. At the No. 1 singles spot, Quijano won 7-5 in the first set, but fell 7-5 in the second and the Tars' De Fraia won the third set 10-4 to secure the win. At No. 3, Yadav dropped his first set 6-3 to Melhaoui. He rallied for a 6-4 win in the second set, but was edged 10-8 in the third.

The Bobcats are back in action on Saturday, March 2, when they host Wheaton (Mass.) at 3 p.m.
