No. 23 men's tennis rolls 9-0 at home against Wheaton

LEWISTON, Maine -- The No. 23 nationally ranked Bates men's tennis team didn't surrender a set in handing visiting Wheaton (Mass.) College its first loss of the season, 9-0 in Merrill Gymnasium on Saturday.

The visiting Lyons (3-1) put up their biggest doubles fight at the No. 1 spot, where Bates senior Josh Quijano (Los Angeles, Calif.) and junior Jacob Kauppila (Chesterfield, Mo.) defeated Ian Tracy and Javier Esteban de Celis 8-5. Juniors Vidyut Yadav (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) and Nick Glover (Austin, Texas) won 8-1 at No. 2 doubles, and senior Duane Davis (Dix Hills, N.Y.) and sophomore Alex Kennedy (New York, N.Y.) won 8-4 at third doubles.

In singles, Quijano put away Tracy 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1; Kauppila defeated Esteban de Celis 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2; routed Jeremy Ryser 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3; junior Jacob Eisenberg (Armonk, N.Y.) defeated David Hernaez Sanz 6-0, 6-4 at No. 4; Kennedy downed Jorge Aguirre Martinexz 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5; and first-year Alex Jacobs (Short Hills, N.J.) defeated Zach Strempel at No. 6 singles 7-6(3), 6-1.

Bates will host No. 10 Brandeis on Sunday in Merrill, with a scheduled start of 2pm.
