No. 23 men's tennis loses narrowly at No. 13 Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The No. 23 nationally ranked Bates men's tennis team won three out of six singles matches against No. 13 Mary Washington on Friday, but the host Eagles swept doubles play and defeated the Bobcats 6-3.

Senior captain Josh Quijano (Los Angeles, Calif.) won at No. 1 singles for the fourth straight match, defeating Matt Miles 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. The Bobcats won at the top three spots in the lineup at singles.

Junior Jacob Kauppila (Chesterfield, Mo.) won at No. 2 singles over Patrick Hughes, 6-2, 6-3, to also rise to 4-2 on the season. Junior Vidyut Yadav (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) rose to 3-1 at No. 3 singles on the year with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Michael Fleming. Sophomore Alex Kennedy (New York, N.Y.) nearly came back from dropping the first set 6-0 to Derek Hagino at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-7(5), 10-8.

Bates narrowly dropped two of the three doubles matches. Senior Ben Eckardt (Montgomery, N.J.) and senior Duane Davis (Dix Hills, N.Y.) fell in a tiebreaker to Hughes and Michael Fleming 8-7(4). At No. 2, Yadav and junior Nick Glover (Austin, Texas) lost 8-6 to Ryland Byrd and Hagino.

Bates (3-3) remains at UMW to play Wisconsin-Whitewater Saturday at 4pm.
