No. 23 men's tennis edged 5-4 by UW-Whitewater

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The No. 23 nationally ranked Bates men's tennis team came back from a 4-2 deficit to tie Wisconsin-Whitewater at 4-4, before the Warhawks pulled out a 5-4 victory with a win at No. 5 singles on Saturday at the University of Mary Washington.

Wisconsin-Whitewater's Brendan Pietila clinched the win for the Warhawks (8-3) with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 win over Bates senior Ben Eckardt (Montgomery, N.J.) at No. 5 singles.

Bates won three out of six singles matches for the second day in a row, as senior captain Josh Quijano (Los Angeles, Calif.) picked up his fifth consecutive victory at No. 1 singles with a 6-1, 6-2 decision over Jimmy Engelhart. Junior Jacob Kauppila (Chesterfield, Mo.) defeated Brandon Dechter 7-5, 7-5 at No. 2 singles to close Bates' deficit to 4-3, and first-year Alex Jacobs (Short Hills, N.J.) finished off Noah Guillermo at No. 6 singles, 6-4, 2-6, 6-0, to tie the match at 4-4.

Quijano and Kauppila defeated Engelhart and Alex Gray 8-5 at No. 1 doubles, but the Warhawks won 8-5 at No. 2 doubles and 8-6 at No. 3, effectively creating the difference in the match.

Bates (3-4) plays at No. 21 Johns Hopkins University on Sunday at 1pm.
