Babson slips past men’s tennis 5-4

BABSON PARK, Mass. -- The No. 40 nationally ranked Bates College men's tennis team was tripped up at Babson College 5-4 in a non-conference match played at the Babson Tennis Complex today.

The Bobcats fall to 3-7 overall, while the Beavers improve to 7-3 this season.

Babson came out of doubles play up 2-1, securing wins at Nos. 1 and 3. The duo of senior Ben Eckardt (Montgomery, N.J.) and junior Nick Glover (Austin, Texas) earned the lone Bates victory in doubles action, topping their opponents 8-6. The pair of senior Josh Quijano (Los Angeles, Calif.) and senior Duane Davis (Dix Hills, N.Y.) battled at the No. 1 doubles position, but were narrowly edged 8-7.

The Beavers clinched the win with victories at Nos. 2,3 and 4 singles. Quijano picked up a win for the Bobcats at the top singles spot. It's his seventh win in the last eight matches at the No. 1. He defeated Alberto De Mendiola 7-5, 6-4. Glover was also victorious in singles action, taking down Tyler Zhang 7-5, 6-4 at No. 5. At No. 6, Duane Davis cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win for Bates at No. 6.

The Bobcats are back in action on Thursday, April 4, when they host Colby for a NESCAC match at 4 p.m.
