No. 7 Amherst hands men's tennis its first NESCAC loss of the season

AMHERST, Mass. -- The Bates men's tennis team accepted their first conference loss of the season after three victories, falling 8-1 to No. 7 nationally ranked Amherst on Wednesday.

Bates (5-8, 3-1 NESCAC) earned its lone point at No. 2 doubles, where senior Ben Eckardt (Montgomery, N.J.) and junior Nick Glover (Austin, Texas) moved to 5-0 as a pair with an 8-7(5) win over Damien Ruparel and Kevin Ma.

Amherst (13-2, 5-0 NESCAC) took the other two doubles matches for a 2-1 lead, with the No. 3 matchup also begin decided in a tiebreaker, where junior Jacob Kauppila (Chesterfield, Mo.) and sophomore Alex Kennedy (New York, N.Y.) fell 8-7(3) to Sean Wei and William Turchetta. Meanwhile senior captains Josh Quijano (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Duane Davis (Dix Hills, N.Y.) fell 8-5 to Zach Bessette and Harris Foulkes at No. 1 doubles.

Kauppila engaged in a spirited battle at No. 2 singles, where his eight-match winning streak ended by a 6-4, 3-6, 10-6 score to Ma.

Bates hosts defending national champion Middlebury on Friday at 4pm.
