HADLEY, Mass. -- The Bates men's tennis team landed two players on the 2019 NESCAC Men's Tennis All-Conference Team Friday, as senior Josh Quijano and junior Jacob Kauppila both won Second Team honors in singles.
Kauppila (Chesterfield, Mo.) wins his second career All-NESCAC honor, after being named First Team All-NESCAC as a doubles team with Ben Rosen '18 a year ago. Kauppila amassed an 11-2 record in singles in 2018-19, ending the season on a nine-match winning streak, which was capped by a 7-5, 6-3 win over Williams' Austin Barr while playing No. 1 singles. Included in that streak were No. 2 singles victories over Mary Wahsington's Patrick Hughes, Johns Hopkins' Scott Thygesen, Middlebury's Andre Xiao and Bowdoin's Oscar Yang.
Quijano (Los Angeles, Calif.) earned his first All-NESCAC award after mounting an outstanding senior season as Bates' No. 1 singles player. He started out as the Bobcats' No. 6 singles player and moved up to No. 3 singles before the end of his freshman year, where he remained for the better part of his sophomore and junior seasons.
Quijano moved up to No. 1 singles this year after the graduation of Rosen, and he thrived despite playing against an array of some of the top players in Division III. Between March 2 and April 19, he won 10 matches and lost only once. His victories at No. 1 singles came against such opponents as David Aizengerg of Brandeis, Matt Miles of Mary Wahsington, Jimmy Engelhart of Wisconsin-Whitewater, Tyler Barr of MIT, Alberto De Mendiola of Babson, Scott Altmeyer of Colby, and Noah Farrell of Middlebury. Three of his four losses were decided in third-set tiebreakers.
Quijano was also selected as third alternate in the 32-player NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Singles Championship, being played next week at Kalamazoo College.
