LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates College senior John Wisener has been named to the 2014 CoSIDA/Capital One Division III Academic All-District Men's Track/Cross Country Team, announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America on Thursday. Wisener was selected to the Division III team for District 1, which comprises Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont.
Wisener (Ridgewood, N.J.) received the honor a week after competing in the pole vault in the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships, his second NCAA championship appearance this year. The senior captain graduated from Bates on Sunday with a degree in chemistry and a cumulative grade point average of 3.40.
Wisener's superb senior year was marked by setting the program indoor (15-9.25) and outdoor (16-0.25) pole vault records. He became Bates' first pole vaulter to clear a height higher than 16 feet on April 5 in a meet at the University of New Hampshire, weeks after setting the team's indoor standard at the Tufts Last Chance Meet. Wisener placed 15th at the NCAA Indoor Championships in March and tied for 17th at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in May.
First-team Academic All-District honorees, including Wisener, advance to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
He is the program's first CoSIDA/Capital One Division III Academic All-District Men's Track/Cross Country Team selection since Andrew Wortham '13 in 2012.
