GENEVA, Ohio -- Bates senior captain Patrick Griffin ran the second fastest 800-meter race of his career on Friday at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships, at 1:52.30, but not fast enough to make the nine-man field of Saturday's finals.

Griffin's (Harvard, Mass.) first individual NCAA Championship race also became the last of his college career, as he placed 14th in the event, 0.21 seconds behind 13th-place Zach Campbell of Christopher Newport. The ninth and final athlete to reach the finals was Claremont-Mudd-Scripps senior Joshua Sealand at 1:51.63.

Griffin was the 12th seed in the event, based on the 1:51.22 time he ran last week at MIT. He will graduate Sunday as a one-time All-American, a two-time All-NESCAC athlete and a four-time NESCAC All-Academic selection.

The Bates men's team has one event remaining at the national meet: junior Adedire Fakorede (Newark, N.J.) competes in the hammer throw at 1:30pm.
