No. 21 men's track places second in Maine State Indoor Championships

LEWISTON, Maine -- Senior Adedire Fakorede broke the meet record and captured the Peter Goodrich Memorial Most Valuable Field Athlete Award as the No. 21 nationally ranked Bates men's track and field team placed second out of four teams in the 50th Maine State Indoor Championships Saturday in Merrill Gymnasium.

Top performances by the Bobcats included:

  • Fakorede (Newark, N.J.) won the 35-pound weight throw with a top effort of 62 feet, 5.75 inches, passing David Pless's meet record of 62-1.25 by 4.5 inches. The mark was a quarter-inch shy of his personal record in the event. Fakorede also placed second in the shot put (48-9) to win his first Goodrich award.
  • Junior Mark Fusco (Cheshire, Conn.) won the 600-meter run in 1:22.67.
  • Sophomore Beaufils Kimpolo-Pene (Bronx, N.Y.) won the high jump (6-4) and was fourth in the long jump (20-10.75).
  • Senior Jack Kiely (Severna Park, Md.) won the 1,000 meters in 2:34.72 and placed second in the mile (4:14.54).
  • Senior Garrett Anderson (Raleigh, N.C.) won the pole vault with a season-best mark of 14-5.25.
  • Senior David Dick (Ipswich, Mass.) finished second in the pole vault (13-5.25).
  • Junior Ian Wax (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) placed second in the 1,000 meters (2:35.68).
  • Junior Henry Colt (Whatley, Mass.) took second place in the 3,000 meters (8:45.56).
  • Senior Stephen Rowe (Gambier, Ohio) finished second in the 5,000 meters (15:26.09).
  • Junior Ryan Corley (Oakland, Calif.) finished second in the 400 meters (52.16).
  • Senior Zach Magin (West Hartford, Conn.) finished third in the 3,000 meters (8:45.57).
  • Junior Michael Somma (Colts Neck, N.J.) placed third in the 400 meters (52.56).
  • Sophomore Justin Levine (Boca Raton, Fla.) took third place in the 5,000 meters (15:32.37).
  • Junior Zack Campbell (Brooklyn, N.Y.) finished third in the weight throw (49-8.5).
  • First-year Ryan Nealis (London, England), Wax, sophomore Gabe Benson (Maplewood, N.J.) and senior Rob Flynn (Bedford, N.H.) placed second in the 4x800 "Blackout Relay" to end the meet, in 8:09.33.

Bates next competes in the BU Valentine Invitational next Friday and Saturday.
