LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates College is set to host the 119th Maine State Men's Outdoor Track & Field Championships this weekend for the second straight year, with the hammer throw and discus both taking place Friday, followed by the rest of the meet on Saturday afternoon.

The hammer throw competition will begin at 4pm Friday on the throwing circle adjacent to the Lafayette Street Softball Field and the Russell Street Track. Discus throw competition will start 15 minutes after the hammer. Bates senior captain Adedire Fakorede (Newark, N.J.), the winner of the past two Tootel Memorial Most Valuable Field Athlete Awards, will be favored in both events.

The bulk of the meet begins at 1:15 Saturday, with the pole vault, long jump and shot put.

Bowdoin won the meet last year to stop Bates' seven-year streak. The Polar Bears won the first Maine State Championship in 1895 and have captured 39 team titles in all. The University of Maine won 51 times before it stopped participating in the mid-1990s.

Bates has won the meet 22 times in all, including 14 of the last 16. Colby has won six times, last in 1998.
