BOSTON -- The only sophomore or freshman in as strong a field as has ever been seen at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships in the weight throw, Bates sophomore John Rex took 19th place in the event in his first career appearance at nationals, matching his seeding in the event

Competing near his hometown at Boston's Reggie Lewis Center, Rex (Andover, Mass.) threw the 35-pound weight 56 feet, 1.25 inches on his second attempt, over three feet short of his season best but enough for 19th place in Division III. He fouled on his first and third attempts and was done for the day.

Rex and the Bates outdoor track and field team open the outdoor season at MIT on April 6 in a quad-meet including Tufts and RPI.
