Men's cross country opens season in Bates/Colby Class Wave Races

NEW GLOUCESTER, Maine -- Senior captain Allen Sumrall had the second fastest time of the day as the No. 8-ranked team in New England, the Bates men's cross country team, opened with a 62-48 loss to No. 6 Colby in modified scoring Saturday in the rivals' annual Class Wave Races.

The annual meet pits both teams' juniors and seniors against one another in one race, and first-years and sophomores in the other, with the top seven finishers scoring points, with higher score winning. Colby outscored Bates 29-26 in the junior/senior race and 33-22 in the freshman/sophomore race, for a combined win of 62-48.

Sumrall (Albuquerque, N.M.) finished Bates' 6-kilometer home course at Pineland Farms in 19:27, second only to Colby junior David Chelimo (19:15). Senior Taylor Saucier (Freeport, Maine) came in second for Bates and fifth overall in 19:33, followed closely by junior Evan Ferguson-Hull (West Hartford, Conn.) in sixth (19:35) and junior Joe Doyle (Glastonbury, Conn.) in seventh (19:38). 

Senior Gregg Heller (Walla Walla, Wash.) took ninth place in 19:39, junior Mike Horowicz (Montclair, N.J.) was 10th (19:55) and senior Bryant Perkins (Sanford, Maine) was 15th (20:26).

Colby sophomore Sam Sinkler won the first-year sophomore race in 19:52, followed in second by Bates sophomore Matt Morris (Rockville, Md.) in 20:03. First-year Mark Fusco (Cheshire, Conn.) placed fifth (20:22), and was followed in Bates' scoring by sophomore Ben Tonelli (Seattle, Wash.) in seventh (20:38), first-year Ryan Betz (Indianapolis, Ind.) in ninth (20:47, first-year Nico Johnson (Frederick, Md.) in 12th (21:04) and first-year Ian Wax (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) in 14th (21:24).

Bates returns to Pineland to host the Bates Invitational next Saturday.
