Men's cross country hosts Pineland Super XC Shootout, tops RPI

NEW GLOUCESTER, Maine -- The Bates men's cross country team showed outstanding depth Saturday at the Pineland Super XC Shootout against nationally ranked Tufts and RPI, placing second among the two nationally ranked teams. 

With each team's top 10 runners figuring into the scoring, No. 11 Tufts won the meet with 133 points, followed by No. 32 Bates (152) and No. 29 RPI (186). 

After race winner Luke O'Connor of Tufts (25:39.8) and runner-up Benjamin Fazio of RPI (25:47.0), Bates placed the next three runners and five of the top 12. Senior captain Allen Sumrall (Albuquerque, N.M.) finished the 8-kilometer home course in third place out of 64 individuals in a time of 26:09.2, followed by senior Taylor Saucier (Freeport, Maine) in fourth (26:16.8) and senior Gregg Heller (Walla Walla, Wash.) in fifth (26:20.0). Junior Joe Doyle (Glastonbury, Conn.) placed eighth overall (26:41.2) and junior Evan Ferguson-Hull (West Hartford, Conn.) was 12th (26:55.4).

Junior Michael Horowicz (Montclair, N.J.) led Bates' second five, placing 16th overall (27:06.1). He was followed by sophomore Matt Morris (Bethesda, Md.) in 22nd (27:12.8), senior Bryant Perkins (Sanford, Maine) in 25th (27:25.9), sophomore Ben Tonelli (Seattle, Wash.) in 27th (27:34.7) and first-year Mark Fusco (Cheshire, Conn.) in 30th (27:46.3).

In this week's USTFCCCA Division III cross country polls, RPI is ranked third in the Atlantic Region; the New England Region has Tufts at No. 4 and Bates at No. 7.

Bates next competes at the Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh University on Oct. 2.
