Men's cross country places seventh out of 40 teams at ECACs

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- The Bates men's cross country team took seventh place among 40 teams competing Saturday at the ECAC Division III Cross Country Championships, hosted by Williams College at Mt. Greylock High School.

With some of its top runners taking the week off from racing in preparation for next weekend's NCAA Regionals, Bates scored 237 points, tying with the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy but winning the tiebreaker over USMMA for seventh place. The Bobcats were 43 points ahead of ninth-place WPI and trailed sixth-place New York University by 82. Amherst won the meet with 53 points.

Bates placed four individuals among the top 60 out of 278 runners overall, led by junior Nick Orlando (Milton, Mass.), who finished the 8-kilometer course in 27:29.9, a 5:31.9-per mile pace, for 23rd place. Senior Chris Shaw (Delmar, N.Y.) was 28th (27:39.8), followed by senior Bryant Perkins (Sanford, Maine) in 40th (27:51.4) and senior Porter Harrast (Decatur, Ga.) in 60th (28:13.5). 

First-year Ryan Betz (Indianapolis, Ind.) placed 89th (28:48.6) as Bates' fifth and final scorer, with sophomore Chris Dsida (Milton, Mass.) 113th (29:15.8) and junior Olin Carty (Des Moines, Iowa) in 158th as the team's displacers.

The NCAA Regionals take place at Harkness State Park in Waterford, Conn., with the men's race starting at 12:30pm.
