Woods finishes ninth in 15K freestyle at UVM Carnival, leading Nordic team

CRAFTSBURY, Vt. -- Sophomore Kaelyn Woods took ninth place in the women's 15K freestyle mass start race Friday at the UVM Carnival, leading the way for the Bates Nordic ski teams.

Woods (New Gloucester, Maine), who took first place in the Chummy Broomhall Cup last weekend in Presque Isle, notched her second career top-10 EISA carnival finish, and her second in a row. Woods traversed the course in 48:10, in a pack with Middlebury's Katie Feldman (48:05), Dartmouth's Leah Brams (48:07), Middlebury's Cate Brams (48:09) and Vermont's Margie Freed (48:14).

First-year Zoe McKinney (North Conway, N.H.) placed 37th out of 80 competitors with a time of 51:27, and junior captain Samantha Pierce (New Gloucester, Maine) completed Bates' team scoring in 49th place (52:36).

Senior captain Parker McDonald (Wolcott, Colo.) led the Bates men's squad with a 26th-place finish out of 88 athletes in the men's 20K freestyle race, covering the course in a time of 56:19.8

Bates' men's and women's squads each scored the eighth-most carnival points out of 12 teams on the day. First-year athletes Cole Fuller (Bend, Ore.) and Benjamin Keener (Fairbanks, Alaska) finished 54th and 56th, respectively, with times of 59:22.5 and 59:57.0, to round out the Bates men's team's scoring.

Classic technique races for the UVM Carnival will take place Saturday morning at Craftsbury Outdoor Center.
